A confessional LCMS congregation in Amherst, New York

Our History

The history of Calvary Lutheran Church is deeply rooted in the shifting demographics and growth of the Buffalo and Amherst communities.

Foundational Roots:

Serving the English-Speaking Community

Calvary’s origin traces back to a crucial transition period for Lutheranism in Western New York. It was established by the Mission Society of the Lutheran Church of Buffalo. During the 19th century, many German immigrant families were beginning to lose familiarity with their native language. Calvary was founded specifically to provide services in the English language, bridging the gap for younger generations and native English speakers who wanted to remain within the Lutheran faith. In its earliest days, the congregation occupied a small frame building located at the corner of Ellicott and Dodge Streets in Buffalo.

The Suburban Move:

4110 Bailey Avenue (Eggertsville / Amherst)

As the population of Buffalo expanded outward into the suburbs following the world wars, the congregation eventually relocated north to 4110 Bailey Avenue (located in the Eggertsville area of Amherst, bordering Buffalo). For decades, the Bailey Avenue location served as a central fixture for the congregation. It was a bustling community hub that hosted everything from local civic events and musical organizations-like the Amherst Chamber Ensembles in the 1990s-to generational family milestones.

The Modern Era:

575 Ayer Road

Following its time on Bailey Avenue, the church transitioned further into Amherst to its current location at 575 Ayer Road. Today, Calvary Lutheran Church continues its mission as a historical, confessional congregation. It operates as a member of The English District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS)-a fitting alignment given the church’s original 19th-century mission to provide English-language worship to the Western New York region.
